Sherman & Howard Names Stefan Stein New CEO

DENVER, Colo. (January 5, 2022) – Sherman & Howard announced today that Stefan D. Stein has been named Chief Executive Officer of the firm. Stein is a member of the firm’s Litigation, Trials and Appeals practice group. He succeeds Gregory Densen, who has managed the firm since 2016.

Stein makes the transition to CEO at a time of exciting changes for the firm, including the move of its Denver offices to Block 162, a new building located in downtown Denver at 675 15th Street. Sherman & Howard is the region’s oldest law firm, having been in existence for 130 years.

“It is an honor to be chosen to lead the talented group of attorneys and staff who are instrumental to the continued success of our iconic law firm,” said Stein. “Greg’s dedicated and empathetic leadership has been invaluable. He led us through the first several months of the pandemic with daily and weekly messages of reassurance while maintaining one of the most successful practices at the firm. Our entire team is better off due to his efforts.” Stein also gave tribute to “the legacy of Mike Sanchez who successfully led our firm for over two decades prior to Greg’s tenure.”

“My goal is also to help lead a thriving, and dynamic full-service law firm that continues to provide an unwavering commitment to our clients while serving our local communities with pride,” added Stein.

Stein has had two stints at Sherman & Howard. He first joined the firm in 1996 and served as both the firm’s Hiring Member and Litigation Department Chair. In 2002, he moved to Qwest Communications where he held several positions, including Deputy General Counsel, Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and Senior Vice President of Risk Management. In 2013, Stein joined ViaSat as the General Counsel of its Consumer and Small Business Services division. He returned to Sherman & Howard in 2016 where his practice focuses on representing companies and individuals in complex business disputes, government and internal investigations, and securities and insurance coverage litigation.

Stein has been actively involved in community service throughout his legal career. He currently serves as a board member on the Citizen Oversight Board for the City of Denver and as the Vice Chair of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center. Stein was previously a board member and Chair of the Governance Committee of the Jewish Community Center of Denver. He was also a longtime board member as well as the Interim CEO and Board Chair of Urban Peak, a nonprofit organization that provides a convergence of services to homeless youth and youth at risk of becoming homeless.

Stein earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School and his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, where he graduated with Honors in Economics. He has received several honors or recognitions, including Best Lawyers in America (Commercial Litigation and Litigation – Securities), Super Lawyers, Colorado, the Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and the Urban Peak Maverick Thinker Community Service Award.
