Colorado Medical Board Updates Rules on Stimulant Drugs

As of July 16, 2016, the Colorado Medical Board will more closely examine physicians’ prescription of stimulant drugs, which are amphetamine or sympathomimetic amine drugs designated as Schedule II controlled substances. The Board previously stated in regulation 3 CCR 713-8 that it is unacceptable to prescribe stimulants for diet control, to increase working capacity “to combat normal fatigue associated with any endeavor, or to chemically induce euphoria.”

The regulatory language stated above remains unchanged. The new regulatory language added to this rule provides that stimulant drugs should only be prescribed in accordance with generally accepted standard of medical practice. The new regulatory language goes on to state that stimulant drugs may be prescribed for “the treatment of severe of treatment-resistant depression.”
