Sherman & Howard Lawyer Skip Smith Authors Commentary in SpaceNews
DENVER, Colo. (March 1, 2021) — Sherman & Howard lawyer Milton “Skip” Smith authored commentary in the premier space publication SpaceNews. The article, “A New Step for Human Spaceflight and for Space Lawyers: Representing the Private Astronaut,” highlights key legal issues and complex limitations that arose as he represented private astronaut Eytan Stibbe in the negotiation of a first-of-its-kind contract with Axiom Space for a mission to the international space station.
Smith discusses the many complications such contracts pose for lawyers, including the consideration of risks associated with launch and reentry, as well as of contractual risks private astronauts face. Axiom, and any other similar service providers, will enter into contracts with private astronauts for each mission. “In addition to adding a new dimension for space travel, these missions create new challenges and opportunities for space lawyers—representing private astronauts, some of whom are estimated by industry sources to spend approximately $55 million for participating in the Ax-1 mission,” said Smith.
